Rat warning as UK homes see huge increase in rodent activity

Rat infestations in UK properties increased last year; It’s a phenomenon experts attribute to a record-breaking hot summer followed by recent heavy rains. Rentokil Pest Control reported a 10 percent year-on-year increase in confirmed rodent cases; Notable increases were observed in Northern Ireland and Northern England.
Northern Ireland recorded the biggest increase at 26%, followed by Yorkshire (20%) and north-west England (19%).
Some other regions also saw double-digit increases, including the West Midlands (16%) and Scotland (14%).
Rentokil said long-term climate patterns could be contributing to the increase, including 2025 being the UK’s hottest year on record.
He said milder weather could increase mouse reproduction by lengthening the breeding season and leading to larger populations.
Rentokil has warned that the record-breaking wet start to 2026 across the UK could also lead to higher levels of mouse activity.
He said sustained heavy rain can flood nest systems and drainage networks, displacing mice and increasing the likelihood of infestations as they seek higher, drier shelter.

Rentokil’s Paul Blackhurst said: “Rats are extremely skilled swimmers. They can navigate strong currents, enter exposed pipes and drains and swim significant distances in open water.
“However, what they cannot tolerate is prolonged submersion. When burrow systems and sewer networks are flooded, rats are forced to seek higher, drier soil, increasing the risk of infestation on properties.
“Continued wet weather may result in more mice entering properties, with northern areas reporting significant increases in reported activity. Early prevention and professional support is crucial.
“Simple steps such as controlling entry points, effectively managing waste and responding quickly to early signs of activity can make a significant difference. If a problem becomes unmanageable, professional pest control experts are always on hand to offer safe and effective solutions.”
Following periods of heavy rain, storms and flooding, property owners are advised to take proactive steps to reduce the risk of rodent activity, including:
– Clean up debris immediately by removing fallen branches, leaves and other objects that may have accumulated around the property, as they create ideal hiding and nesting spots for mice.
– Closing potential entry points.
– Checking the walls and foundations of the property for gaps as mice can squeeze through “surprisingly small” openings.
– Eliminate food sources by ensuring outdoor trash cans are sturdy, fitted with tight lids, and located as far away from building walls as possible.
