Reddit introduces age verification in the UK ahead of new rules

Reddit announced that people under the age of 18 have brought age verification on the UK site on Monday to stop looking at “certain mature content”.
The Social Media Platform brings measures to comply with new rules within the UK’s online security law, which requires sites showing the introduction of “solid” age control techniques of adult materials.
Reddit, known for his online communities and discussions, said: “It would be useful to confirm whether our security efforts are children or adults.”
“We expect other companies to follow the case or to be implemented if they do not take action,” England regulator offcoming the UK regulator.
Reddit said that since July 14, an external firm named Persona will make age verification for the social media platform through a “photo of your government identity” like a loaded selfie or passport.
He said that Reddit would not access the photo and that only one user would maintain the verification status and date of birth, so that when they try to access limited content, people do not need to re -enter.
Reddit added that he promises not to keep the picture for more than seven days, and that a user could not access his data on the site.
The new rules in the UK will come into force on July 25th.
Ofcom spokesman said: “The society protects young people who have long been protected from alcohol to cigarettes or gambling.
“Now, children will be better protected than online materials that are not suitable for them, while adults have the right to reach legal content.”
Pornhub and some other large adult websites have recently confirmed that they will offer advanced age control over time for new rules.
Pornhub’s parent company Aylo said that he would bring “government -approved age assurance methods”, but he’s not yet explaining how users will require to prove that they’re over 18 years of age.
Ofcom said before, clicking on a button, which is currently requiring an entire adult site, it is not enough.
Companies that cannot meet the rules are faced with a fine of up to 18 million pounds or up to 10% of the worldwide income.
In the most serious cases, he added that payment providers or advertisers can receive a court order for “business deduction measures”, such as asking for the services of advertisers from a platform or asking internet service providers to block access to a site in the UK.
