Health Minister Dinesh Gundu Rao said in Belagavi on December 18 that the Karnataka government will build separate hospitals in areas where the state university affiliated to the district hospital is located.
He was responding to questions from Assembly members NT Srinivas and Prakash Koliwad during the winter session of the Karnataka legislative assembly.
“The State Government has initiated government medical colleges in some districts by adding district hospitals as teaching hospitals. We have taken a policy decision to set up separate district hospitals in these districts. These include Bidar, Kodagu, Chamarajanagar, Vijayanagar and Haveri. As per existing rules, a town with a population of 10 lakh and above and bed occupancy of over 70% is eligible for a district hospital. We have already started work in some districts. The new district hospital in Vijayanagar will be opened in February 2026. “Other regional hospitals will also open in the coming months,” he said.
