Man, 90, dies following devastating Staten Island crash; girl still clinging to life

90-year-old man was involved in the incident Devastating car crash on Staten Island Officials said that the 6-year-old girl, who was seriously injured on Saturday, was in critical condition and died.

Gerardo Avila passed away Staten Island University Northern Hospital Friday on Rockland Ave. in New Springville. and following a crash between a Honda SUV and an Audi SUV near the corner of Forest Hill Road at 10 a.m.

Avila was riding in a Honda HRV with his 6-year-old daughter and a 70-year-old woman believed to be his wife. Police said they were traveling south on Forest Hill Road when they turned left on Rockland Boulevard and collided with an Audi Q5 heading towards Forest Hill.

A 50-year-old man was driving the Audi when the accident occurred.

Avila, the 70-year-old woman who was driving, and the young girl were taken to Staten Island University North Hospital, where Avila died.

According to initial information, the girl, thought to be 7 years old, was in critical condition on Saturday. Police said the 70-year-old woman was in critical but stable condition.

The 50-year-old man driving the Audi was also taken to the same hospital with minor injuries.

While the police continue their investigation into the accident, no arrests have been made.

Initial reports that a passenger in one of the vehicles fled before EMS arrived were not confirmed Saturday, officials said.
