Renters fearful of speaking up about essential repairs

Almost seven out of 10 private housing tenants are worried about requesting repair if they encounter rent increase.
A survey of more than a thousand tenants in Australia found that one third could not provide a five percent increase over what they are currently paying.
Half of the respondents live in homes that need repair and one of the 10 people needs to be performed urgently.
The study conducted by the Australian Social Security Council, NSW University, Sydney’s Poverty and Inequality Partnership, National Shelter and National Tenant Organizations Union, published by the Defending Network 26.
31 percent of rental houses have cockroaches, ant or other pest problems, almost one quarter of one -fourth and one -fifth of one -fifth of hot water problems, almost many moldy baths found found.
Meanwhile, rents have increased by 47 percent in the last five years in calling for the limits of rent increase throughout the country.
Nevertheless, researchers mean that 68 percent of the tenants are afraid of asking the landlord to repair their residence, that they will mean that they will be evacuated, and that 52 percent will be placed in a black list that stops their rental.
The findings were raised for tenants in disadvantaged groups, especially for unemployed, badly educated and disabled people.
ACOSS General Manager Cassandra Goldie said that the study emphasized the serious failures of the Australian housing market.
“It is unacceptable that people in the private leasing market are nervous about requesting basic repairs, because they are afraid of renting or release notification,” he said.
“Everyone deserves to be able to live in safe houses without fear of losing their home.”
Leo Patterson, spokesman for the National Tenants Association Organizations Association, said the report confirms what tenants already know.
“Despite the comprehensive leasing laws on paper, it reveals the sharp gap between legislation and reality,” he said.
“Weak supervision of rent costs, property standards and industry applications rejected the benefits of a safe, stable and healthy house to tenants.”
The agencies participating in the project call for a boundary for legal security that has been improved by further financing for the amount and frequency of rent increases, the abolition of non -ground evacuation and the recommendation of tenants.
