After being pardoned by President Donald Trump on Wednesday, Rep. Henry Cuellar, D-Texas, claimed that he was framed by the Biden administration’s Department of Justice (DOJ) for his staunch opposition to the Biden administration’s open border policies.

During an interview with Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo on “Sunday Morning Futures,” Cuellar was asked if he believed he was being impeached for his criticism of former President Joe Biden’s “open border.”

“Absolutely,” he replied. “The President was right. And now when I look at all the evidence and everything, I definitely feel like I was weaponized.”

In May 2024, the Justice Department charged Cuellar with bribery and acting as a foreign agent for allegedly accepting $600,000 from the Azerbaijani government in exchange for the congressman’s assistance in Washington. The congressman’s wife, Imelda Cuellar, was also charged in connection with the investigation.

Cuellar argued that the Justice Department was weaponized to go after not only him but also his family.

“Let me tell you something… if they want to come after me, because I was a critic of open borders, that’s one thing. But you’re not letting the family in. You’re not doing that,” he scolded. “As a prosecutor, you don’t do these kinds of situations.”

Pressing Cuellar on how he got into this situation, Bartiromo asked the congressman: “What happened between you and the Azerbaijani government?” he asked.

“Let me tell you this. You know, first of all, we are innocent,” he claimed. “And we looked at all the evidence obtained through discovery. We were even allowed to see grand jury testimony. That doesn’t happen very often. And we saw that. And there wasn’t a single person — I’ll emphasize this — who testified. [who] He said it was a response.”

The congressman claimed he was also targeted by an operation that tried to force him to accept bribes, but he never gave up.

“What they did there was wrong… So again, there is no response from any evidence or from any person,” he argued. “And so they even launched an operation to trap me. And it failed.”

When asked who tried to bribe and trap him, Cuellar claimed that the Biden administration and the Department of Justice were responsible for trying to set him up.

“The Biden administration tried to trap me and bribe me, but that failed. This is very important because there’s one more thing; everything came from the Department of Justice in DC,” he claimed.

The congressman told Bartiromo that he had spoken with House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan and requested a meeting to discuss a possible investigation into the prosecutors who prepared the indictment against him and his wife.
