Rep Omar criticizes Sen Schumer for not endorsing Mamdani for NYC mayor

Rep. Ilhan Omar, D-Minn., criticized Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-R.) on Thursday for not supporting Democratic New York City mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdan.
Since his candidacy, the Democratic Party has been embroiled in controversy over how to handle Mamdani’s rise due to his socialist policies and far-left views.
“Now, your leader, Hakeem Jeffries, reluctantly but endorsed Zohran Mamdani, while Chuck Schumer still hasn’t. Why do you think Chuck Schumer hasn’t endorsed Zohran Mamdani?” CNN anchor Kasie Hunt asked Omar.
“I really don’t know. It doesn’t make any sense,” Omar said. “As Democrats, we have always believed in supporting our party’s nominee in an election. Schumer has pressured other Democrats to do the same, and he should follow his own advice.”

Asked whether religion played any role, Omar said, “The tsunami of anti-Muslim attacks we’ve seen is deeply concerning. And I hope the Democratic leadership in the Senate recognizes this and offers support not just to Mamdani, but to the one million Muslims living in New York City and the millions of Muslims living in New York and America.”
When asked how some people found it potentially antisemitic that some people were so slow to condemn Mamdani’s “Globalize the intifada” statement, Omar argued that the accusation had been overused to the point of absurdity.
“Well, it seems like everything he does or says is called anti-Semitic,” Omar said while mocking. “What I do know is that he has support from a broad coalition of New Yorkers. He has a large coalition of Jewish voters who support him. He has a large coalition of Muslims of all denominations. He has a large coalition of young people who support him. And the reason they support him is not just because he is an exciting candidate to support, but because he takes the time to listen to where the policy pain points are for New Yorkers. And he offers a solution for them. They see it. I hope for the kind of progress that he can create for New Yorkers.”

“One of the Democrats campaigning on her behalf and supporting her is Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. Want to see her primary Chuck Schumer?” Hunt asked.
“I want Alex to do whatever he wants, and I will be there to support him,” Omar said.
