According to an official statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will visit Ontario, Canada, from November 11 to 13 to attend the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting with Outreach Partners upon the invitation of Canadian External Affairs Minister Anita Anand. EAM’s participation in the G7 Foreign Ministers’ Meeting reflects India’s commitment to working with international partners to address global challenges and strengthen the voice of the Global South in international forums.

The statement also stated that Jaishankar is expected to hold bilateral talks on the sidelines of the G7 Foreign Ministers Meeting. The G7 Foreign Ministers Meeting takes place on November 11 and 12 in Niagara, a picturesque region of Canada known for its iconic waterfalls. The meeting brings together ministers from G7 member countries Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States and the European Union, as well as many social welfare countries such as India, Australia, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, South Korea, South Africa and Ukraine.

Ahead of the event, Global Affairs Canada (GAC) said it was “delighted to host ministers from a variety of outreach countries, reflecting shared global priorities and partnerships.” The invitation to India was formally extended when Canadian External Affairs Minister Anita Anand traveled to New Delhi last month and met her Indian counterpart, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar. During the talks, both leaders reiterated their common goal of restoring trust and increasing cooperation in key areas of engagement. Before his visit to India, Anand had also met with Jaishankar on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly held in New York on September 29 and continued his efforts to strengthen the dialogue between the two sides.

The current visit also comes in the backdrop of a meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Canadian counterpart Mark Carney in July, which helped lay the groundwork for a reset of bilateral relations that face serious strain in 2023-24.
