Republicans file lawsuit challenging California’s redistricting measure | California

Republicans in California on Wednesday filed a federal lawsuit challenging a high-stakes redistricting measure that would give Democrats five congressional seats.

The measure, Proposition 50, was approved by voters Tuesday evening in a landslide victory for Democrats. The plan temporarily authorizes the California legislature to draw congressional districts and allow Democrats to adopt maps that would help them win five seats in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The plan is a direct response to gerrymandering in Texas, where Republicans have created several new Republican safe districts at the behest of the US president.
