The resolution seeking the removal of Om Birla as Speaker was rejected by voice vote in the Lok Sabha on Wednesday, March 11, 2026.
Amid protests and slogans from the opposition demanding an apology from Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the chairperson Jagdambika Pal announced the rejection of the no-confidence motion.

Mr Pal called on the opposition to take their seats so he could put the motion to a vote. However, while the protests continued, he asked for a vote from the Parliament and the decision was rejected by voice vote, after which he adjourned the Parliament for a day.
Earlier, the Home Minister had reacted harshly to the opposition who had brought a motion to remove Birla from the Assembly Speakership.
The opposition objected to some of Shah’s words and started chanting slogans, interrupting the hearing and demanding an apology from him.

Responding to the two-day debate, Mr. Shah asserted that the Assembly will be governed according to its own rules and not according to the rules of a party.
“After nearly forty years, bringing such a motion against the Speaker of the Parliament is not an ordinary event,” he said.
The Minister of Internal Affairs said that it was unfortunate for parliamentary politics that some opposition parties questioned the honesty of the speaker.
Mr. Shah said that the BJP has been in opposition for the longest time but the party has never moved a no-confidence motion against any Speaker.
“According to the established history of this Assembly, its proceedings are carried out on the basis of mutual trust. The speaker of the Assembly acts as an impartial guardian representing both the ruling party and the opposition. It is unfortunate for parliamentary politics that a decision has been made to dismiss the speaker of the Assembly.”
Mr Shah said the opposition had raised questions about Mr Birla’s integrity and argued that this was akin to questioning the country’s democratic processes.
Mr. Birla was absent from the House for the entire duration of the debate.
