Methodology

For our analysis, we used mass -originated data from OpenStreetmap (OSM) to take the locations and limits of every beach in England and Wales.

If there is no name for a beach, we supplied from Ordnance Survey.

We manually combined some beaches side by side and we had the same island in OSM data.

In some cases, OSM combines a few beaches to the larger ones, even if the natives see them as separate beaches.

In order to calculate the total crimes on a beach, we first filed police crimes from July 2024 to June 2025 for 12 months.

Then we calculated the number of crimes with coordinates on each beach (plus a bumper zone of 100m).

In addition, we calculated a criminal rate of 1,000 square meters by taking the beach area from OSM geometry. As the form of recorded this geometry is not standardized and the full land/sea limit changes with the tide, the numbers should be taken with a pinch of salt.
