When Gwyneth Paltrow stepped onto the Oscars carpet for the first time in more than a decade, it wasn’t the fabric of her shimmering white dress that stole the show.
Rather, it was the lack of it.
Her custom strapless Giorgio Armani Privé gown featured slits and sheer side panels so high they almost exposed her in a wardrobe malfunction.
In a now-viral clip shared with X, the Marty Supreme star was seen scurrying through the Dolby Theater on Sunday evening with her legs on full display under white silk.
But she lifted up her long skirt to avoid tripping as she walked down the stairs, flashing half of Hollywood while doing so. However, Paltrow appeared unaffected by the accident as she was directed to another area inside the crowded venue.
Meanwhile, fans were shocked by her skin-baring dress, calling it a ‘red carpet nightmare’ and some even asked if her dress was torn. Others described the high fashion moment as ‘inappropriate’ due to the lack of visible underwear.
Fittingly, a photo Paltrow shared on Instagram showing off her ‘weekend’ – and some side hips – appeared to be a harbinger of what was to come. In one photo, she stood awkwardly in front of a mirror trying on the dress while an assistant looked on uncomfortably in the background.
While such a style blunder might have embarrassed other stars on Hollywood’s biggest night, Paltrow, 53, seems to be out of it.
As an insider told the Daily Mail, ‘Gwyneth loves her body and thinks she looks hot, if anyone thinks she’s too old for the dress she won’t accept it.’

‘Gwyneth loves her body and thinks she looks hot,’ an insider told the Daily Mail
“She does what she wants,” the insider said of the Goop founder, who recently launched her own high-priced clothing line.
“She wore something similar in 2013, so it’s clear she loves showing off the body she worked so hard for,” they added, referencing the thigh-high dress she wore to the premiere of Iron Man 3. At the time, Paltrow, who played Pepper Potts in the series, was wearing an Antonio Berardi dress that covered her completely from the front but had side panels.
The mother of two opted for a similarly scandalous style when she hit the red carpet at the premiere of Country Strong in 2010 in a slinky white Emilio Pucci dress with side ties.
A second source told the Daily Mail that Paltrow is a “very confident woman” and therefore was not self-conscious about the backlash, especially considering some of the racy products sold on Goop.
They said, ‘As a woman who sells a candle that smells like her vagina, she is not ashamed of the outfit she wore to the Oscars.’
The source also gave information about her preparation process, stating that Paltrow “tried on a million dresses and chose the one she wore because she loved it and thought it looked great,” adding that she was “not afraid of her body.”

On Sunday, Paltrow presented the inaugural Best Ensemble award, which went to One Battle After Another. He was also there to support his film Marty Supreme, which was nominated for nine awards.
The Iron Man star previously talked about his personal sense of style when speaking to him. British Vogue last year she said: ‘I love fashion, I really do. ‘I think things are going in a bit of a weird direction these days, so I’m going to bring my old school back.’
She apparently hinted at the Oscar crowd: ‘The thing about me is, my style doesn’t change much. ‘I believe in tailoring and a certain restraint, but always with a bit of a twist.’
