Panic as rat discovered running riot on a plane mid-flight | Politics | News

A large rat rampaged through the cabin, forcing the cancellation of a transatlantic flight, stranding more than 250 passengers 8,000 kilometers from destination.

The rodent, which was first spotted as the plane crossed the Atlantic Ocean, was photographed climbing around the cabin and even running along the rails inside the ship.

Having little choice mid-flight, the plane’s captain continued on to Aruba before decommissioning the plane due to any inactivity and deep cleaning of the ship.

While KLM Airline confirmed that the incident was unusual and usual building hygiene measures were needed, it is understood that the mouse did not interfere with the aircraft’s onboard services.

However, passengers who were scheduled to return to the Netherlands via Bonaire found themselves in a difficult situation due to the cancellation.

KLM provided hotel accommodation and assisted passengers in claiming compensation under existing passenger rights regulations.

The European airline says the situation is rare and frustrating, but points out that safety and hygiene standards must be guaranteed before long-haul flights are undertaken.

A spokesman said there was no explanation as to how the escaped rodent got onto the plane, noting that this had never happened before on KLM’s long-haul services in recent memory.

KLM informed customers that safety protocols were being followed and the aircraft would remain grounded until the issue was fully resolved.

A representative of the company told a Dutch media outlet that it was “a great misfortune for the passengers who had to experience this.”

In a video clip seen by the Express, passengers can be heard screaming in shock as the rodent wanders around the cabin.

“Passengers remained calm and staff kept a close eye on the animal,” an airline spokesman said. “And the animal did not go near the food.”
