For the first time in the City of London’s more than 800-year history, the Lord Mayor’s Show will become the Lady Mayor’s Show.

Although Dame Susan Langley DBE is not the first female lord mayor, she is the first person to hold the title of lady mayor.

He was elected as the 697th Lord Mayor of London, replacing 62-year-old Alderman Alastair King, who was born in London’s East End.

She became the third female mayor, but the first to insist that this year’s Lord Mayor’s Show be renamed the Lady Mayor’s Show.

Dating back to the 13th century, the Mayor’s Parade is one of the oldest civic parades, with a parade spanning more than three miles and involving more than 125 organizations and thousands of people.

To talk BBCHe said: ‘This role has a tradition that’s hundreds of years old, going back to 1189, and the tradition is magnificent. But we also need to stretch slowly.

‘There were two female mayors before out of 696 and I will be the 697th.

‘But I’ll be the first person to take the name ‘lady mayor’ and to be honest I’ve never thought of anything else. ‘I’m not a lord, I’m a lady, that’s who I am.’

The annual pageant dates back to 1215, when King John allowed the City of London to appoint its own mayor in the hope of rallying support for his troubled reign, and decreed that any new holder of the position must go to Westminster and swear fealty.

Dame Susan will don her traditional red gown and black feathered hat before boarding the golden state carriage, which was first used in 1757 to parade from Mansion House, the Lord Mayor’s official residence, to the Royal Courts of Justice on the Strand.

The parade will start from Mansion House at 11am and travel to the Royal Courts, St Paul’s Cathedral and Temple, then return to Mansion House at 2.40pm, with more than 350,000 people expected to line the streets.

Dame Susan was born in Whitechapel and grew up in West Ham and Hornchurch; He attended local school before embarking on a successful career in business and civic leadership.

In 2018 he was elected to represent Aldgate Ward at the Court of Aldermen, a committee that forms part of the City of London Corporation, and subsequently served as Sheriff of the City of London for 2023/24.

‘It will be truly unforgettable to be part of this historic procession, moving through the streets of the Square Mile in the State Coach and experiencing the wonderful atmosphere of the Show with everyone!

‘During my mayoralty, I hope to work to strengthen London’s global leadership, drive business growth and ensure the City continues to have a positive social impact, while demonstrating to future generations that the City is a great place to live and work.’
