Mythological action drama Kantara: Chapter 1 is the prequel to the 2022 blockbuster Kantara. Directed by Rishab Shetty, it stars him, Gulshan Devaiah, Rukmini Vasanth and Jayaram in the lead roles. Released on October 2, coinciding with Gandhi Jayani and Dussehra, Kantara Part 1 caused havoc at the box office, grossing over Rs 600 million worldwide.

But on the second Monday, October 13, the Rishab Shetty film saw its lowest earnings ever. According to entertainment streaming portal Sacnilk’s initial estimates, the prequel has collected only Rs 13.50 crore in India. This takes its net domestic collections to Rs 451 billion. Its domestic gross collections are around Rs 540 crore.

The film, originally in Kannada and available in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu and Malayalam, is produced by Vijay Kiragandur and Chaluve Gowda under the banner Hombale Films.

In March 2024, it was announced that Kantara Part 1 will premiere on Amazon Prime Video following its theatrical release. According to reports, the OTT platform has acquired the rights of the film for a whopping price of 125 million rupees. It will start airing in four southern languages ​​in four weeks by the end of October and the Hindi dubbed version will be available in eight weeks by the end of November.
