Risotto rice under threat from flamingoes in north-eastern Italy | Farming

An unusual bird infuriates plants and ordeals in Northeast Italy: Flamingo.

Flamingos are relatively newcomers in the region, and in Ferrara province, they settled in flooded fields that produce brass for risotto between Venice and Ravenna.

Birds do not target rice seedlings, but use their gear feet to mix the soil and grab molluscs, algae or insects from shallow water. Rice is a collateral damage.

Now the farmers began to patrol the day day and night to remove birds from rice plants. Farmers shoot Honk truck horns, explosion barrels and even small gas balls with noisy explosions. However, noise often sends flamingos to another nearby paddy flying flaley.

Enrico Fabbri, a local breeder, said that he had courage after seeing up to 90% production losses in some sewing areas.

“These are new things that have never been before. You devote a lot of time to prepare everything, and you care,” said 63 -year -old Fabbri, next to one of the paddy on the skirts of Jolanda di Savoia. “Then, when the crop began to grow, it’s like taking a newborn child.

Flamingos seems to flow into the Adriatic Sea on a reserve on the coast just south of the Poland, one of the old nesting areas in the nearby Comacchio valleys.

According to ASOER President Roberto Tinarelli, the drought in Southern Spain has been there since 2000, after 2000. Emilia-Romagna Ornithologists Association.

Previously, Flamingos said that in the lakes in North Africa, a part of Spain and some of the Camargue region in France.

There has not yet been any research on why these flamingos began to look for food further because they started to look for food from spring to the beginning of summer for a few weeks as a way to germinate the newly planted rice seeds. Flamingos are a threat until the pads are vacated.

“Obviously, we are looking for answers from those who have to cope with the problem. From an environmental point of view, all this is beautiful, but we should not forget that rice cultivation is among the most expensive, comprehensive products,” he said. “They are beautiful animals, this is their way to move and behave, but the problem is trying to limit the assets as much as possible.”

Tinarelli proposed several humane and effective solutions to fictitger flamingos, such as paddy surrounding with long trees or fences, and even better, it reduced the water levels of the fresh paddy from 12 inches (30 cm) 2-4 (5-10cm).

“This is enough for the growth of rice, but it is definitely less attractive for flamingos that need to spread in water,” he said.
