Poundland closing store today with 8 more shutting before February – full list | UK | News

Discount retail giant Poundland is closing one of its stores today; The other seven stores will close their doors completely before February.

The troubled bargain brand has closed more than 100 stores since mid-2025 after being sold to an investment firm for a convenient £1.

Around seven stores are scheduled to close before February, but affected locations may experience discounts of up to 40% before closing stores completely.

Five more stores will close in February.

Poundland is among the chains that have suffered from pressure on shoppers throughout the year, despite its value proposition.

As a result the group was sold for £1 and began a major restructuring plan.

This included the initial closure of 57 stores, in a move that put more than 1,000 jobs at risk.

The company, which was acquired by investment firm Gordon Brothers, has since announced more tranches of closures and is scheduled to close more than 100 sites by the start of 2026 as part of efforts to reduce its footprint from about 800 sites to 650 to 700 stores.

Here is the full list of Poundland branches that closed before February:

Bearwood Smethwick – 23 January

Cameron Toll in Edinburgh – 20 January

Nottingham Eastpoint in Nottinghamshire – 22 January

Lymington, Hampshire – 23 January

Christchurch, High Street, Dorset – 23 January

One of the key pressure points on retail is business rates. In the autumn budget, Chancellor Rachel Reeves announced lower multipliers for retail, hospitality and leisure properties. However, the budget also confirmed the end of the Covid-era business rates relief, which was scheduled to end but the government chose not to re-extend.

At the other end of the scale, Games Workshop recently reported record half-year sales. Sales increased online and in stores in the first half of the fiscal year; It was sold in 575 stores worldwide, 134 of which were in the United Kingdom.
