It has buildings, institutions, government programs, warships, currency, and now Donald Trump is getting an airport named after him, even as he looks forward to a towering Trump presidential library in Miami.
Florida governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill on Monday renaming Palm Beach international airport to President Donald J Trump international airport.
Trump’s family company filed a lawsuit trademark application For airport name in February. If approved, the name change will go into effect on July 1.
The Florida airport is the latest in a string of buildings, institutions, government programs, Navy battleships, national park passes and even coins to be named after the U.S. president.
DeSantis also worked last year to acquire a parcel of land in Miami that would house Trump’s presidential library. Trump at Truth Social on Monday sent An image of the library showing a giant mirrored skyscraper emblazoned with his name and the American flag, set to dramatic music.
The video includes panning shots of the tower’s exterior and interior, with a presidential jet parked in the lobby next to a golden escalator similar to the one Trump used to launch his presidential campaign in 2015. Other shots show a giant ballroom, an Oval Office replica, rooftop gardens and a large, gold statue of Trump as he plans for the White House.
A credit says the design comes from Bermello Ajamil, a Miami-based firm. Trump posted the video with no explanation other than a link to a new website for the library. The website says “coming soon” with a link to donate money.
The White House did not immediately respond to questions about the plans.
Trump, a New York native, moved to Florida in 2019. He lived in a penthouse in Trump Tower before the move, but his primary residence has since been at the Mar-a-Lago resort in West Palm Beach.
To change the name, a formal request must be made to the Federal Aviation Administration, which then processes the change into various flight chart and navigation databases and airport signage must be changed.
Last week, representative Brian Mast introduced legislation to change the airport’s three-letter code from PBI to DJT, which stands for Trump’s initials.
US paper money will bear Trump’s signature starting this summer, marking the first time a sitting president has signed American money, the US Treasury said last week.
Trump’s name has also been attached to a planned class of Navy warships, a visa program for wealthy foreigners, a government-run prescription drug website and federal savings accounts for children.
In December, the board of directors of the John F Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, which Trump filled with his allies when he took over the board, added Trump’s name to the institution.
Trump’s name was also added to the United States Institute of Peace building in Washington in December, months after his administration seized the nonprofit and nearly shut it down.
Earlier this month, a federal art panel of Trump-appointed members approved a commemorative gold coin featuring Trump’s image, part of a series of coins the U.S. Mint plans to produce this year to celebrate the United States’ 250th birthday.
In February, the White House confirmed that Trump had floated the idea of giving up control of funding for the New York Hudson River tunnel project in exchange for Democratic senator Chuck Schumer’s support of renaming Washington Dulles airport and New York’s Penn Station after Trump.
