Microsoft AI CEO Mustafa Suleyman said the software giant will not create AI services that provide “simulated erotica” and is moving away from its long-time partner OpenAI.

“This is not a service that we would provide,” Suleiman said Thursday at the Paley International Council Summit in Menlo Park, California. “Other companies will build it.”

Solomon’s comments come a week after OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said his company plans to allow verified adults to use ChatGPT for erotic purposes. Altman said OpenAI “is not the world’s elected moral police.”

Microsoft has been a major investor and cloud partner of OpenAI for years, and the two companies have leveraged their respective strengths to build large AI businesses. But the relationship has started to show signs of tension recently, with OpenAI partnering with Microsoft’s rivals. Google And Seerand Microsoft is focusing more on its own AI services.

Earlier Thursday, Microsoft announced A host of new features for the Copilot AI chatbot, including an AI companion called Mico that can respond to users via a call feature and express itself by changing its colour.

Suleiman wrote in August: article “We should build artificial intelligence for humans, not to be humans.” He argued that tech companies should not produce “apparently conscious” services that could give people the impression they could cause pain, and wrote that conscious AIs could create another “axis of division” for humanity.

On Thursday, Suleiman said the creation of seemingly conscious AI is already happening, primarily through erotically focused services. In addition to Altman’s comments, he also referenced Grok, which Elon Musk made in July. started her own supporting features, including a female anime character.

“You can already see that in some avatars and people who are moving in a kind of sex robot erotica direction,” Suleiman said. “This is very dangerous and I think we need to make conscious decisions to avoid this kind of thing.”

OpenAI did not immediately respond to requests for comment, while xAI responded by calling it “Old Media Lies.”
