National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) estimates that 730 people are killed and 17,000 are injured each year due to objects in the road. The institution said that 81 percent of accidents were caused by unsafe loads in passenger vehicles.

NHTSA advises drivers transporting cargo to tie down the cargo with ropes, nets or straps, and for large cargo, tying objects directly to the vehicle or trailer is recommended. Additionally, NHTSA recommends that drivers consider covering the entire load with a sturdy tarp or netting. The agency warns against loading “excessive amounts of cargo” and asks drivers to double-check their cargo to make sure it is safe.

All 50 states and Washington DC have laws regarding unsecured loads. NHTSA says “drivers are responsible for the safe operation of their vehicles at all times,” which includes properly securing cargo.

“Violations of unsecured cargo laws carry state-specific penalties that include fines of up to $5,000,” warns NHTSA.
