Runs 10.2 seconds to win Queensland 100m title despite being bedridden with sinus

Gout Gout decided to go fast this weekend. And it was, up to a point. But the best-laid plans can’t account for “crazy” conditions, colds, and being bedridden the day before the race.

Gut spent Friday in bed with a sinus problem and competed with a phlegmy throat and stuffy nose. It rained in the morning and the wind was strong all day.

You might say it’s not ideal for running fast.

However, Gout was fast enough to win the under-20 title in the 100 meters at the Queensland athletics championships; But that was never the real question for a man who could beat not only his province’s fastest juniors, but also the world’s fastest under-20 athletes (over 200 metres) in a matter of months.

His time of 10.2 seconds was a disappointing time at first glance. But considering the sickness and the wind, it was a more than solid performance. After running 10 seconds straight on the same track three weeks ago, this wasn’t the kind of eye-popping time his team was hoping for, but it was a strong effort given what he faced.

“I feel pretty good, it’s good to go for a run. I feel pretty good. I come out here and do what I do,” Gout said afterward in a nasally voice, rather congested from the sinusitis he was still battling.

On Sunday, he will compete in the 200-meter open men’s race, not the under-20s. He hopes to feel better and have better conditions by then.

“I was bedridden yesterday, I still have some congestion in my throat. I’m feeling a little better, but [that was] “It’s still a factor,” he said.
