Russell Allan Wilson: Tributes for Australian soldier in Ukraine ‘killed just before wedding’

A memorial ceremony was held for an Australian soldier who was reportedly killed while fighting against Russian occupation in Ukraine.

Australian authorities are trying to confirm reports that Russell Allan Wilson was killed by Russian forces near Pokrovsk in Ukraine’s eastern region in early December.

“The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is aware of reports that an Australian has died in Ukraine and is awaiting confirmation from local authorities,” a spokesman said.

“Australian Government travel advice is do not travel to Ukraine.”

DFAT has not confirmed Mr Wilson’s name due to confidentiality obligations.

However, Australian officials are understood to have provided consular assistance to his family, although his ability to do so is limited due to Ukraine being an active war zone.

Social media posts said Mr Wilson died on December 10 or December 12 after fighting in Ukraine since 2023.

A friend of Mr Wilson’s who fought with him early in the war told the ABC the Australian was killed on December 12.

“Russ was supposed to get married about a week after he was killed. This was his last mission before leaving,” they said.

He is understood to have lived in Queensland and New South Wales before heading to Ukraine following Russia’s large-scale invasion.

A post praising Mr Wilson on social media said the Australian did not die for “glory, medals or headlines”.

“He died because he believed that some things were worth standing for, even if it cost anything,” it said.

A handful of Australians have been killed in Ukraine since the invasion escalated four years ago.

These include Victorian man Sage O’Donnell, who died in 2022.

“Sage died defending the freedom of the Ukrainian people… (he) always believed in defending the country, the people and the right to freedom,” his unnamed mother said at the time.

Australian Trevor Kjeldal was also killed in a mortar attack while fighting Russian forces in Ukraine’s Donbas region in 2022.

The ABC reported in 2022 that Mr. Kjeldal responded to calls for international assistance in defending Ukraine.

Russian forces captured Australian Oscar Jenkins last year and sentenced him to 13 years in a maximum security prison in May.

The news about Mr. Wilson came as Russian President Vladimir Putin used his annual televised New Year’s address to rally his soldiers fighting in Ukraine, telling them he believed in victory in a war he framed as part of an existential struggle with the West.

Putin spoke about the destiny of Russia and the unity of its people, saying that this guarantees the sovereignty and security of the “Motherland”.

His speech came as Russia released video footage of a downed drone and presented it as evidence that Ukraine was trying to attack the presidential residence this week.

Moscow accused Ukraine of targeting Putin’s private home on the shores of Lake Valdai in Russia’s northwest.

Kiev rejected Russia’s claim, calling it a lie designed to derail peace talks.

“No one should accept the unfounded claims of the attacker who indiscriminately targeted Ukraine’s infrastructure and civilians,” said Kaja Kallas, the EU’s top diplomat.

In another video released Wednesday, Russia’s top general told troops to continue creating buffer zones in Ukraine’s Sumy and Kharkiv regions and said Moscow’s forces were advancing faster in December than in other months of 2025.

US President Donald Trump is trying to put an end to the nearly four-year conflict that is Europe’s bloodiest conflict since World War II.

However, the negotiating stances of both sides remained far apart.
