Russia responds after US seized two Venezuelan oil tankers in Europe and the Caribbean: Live updates

The United States has seized a Russian-bound tanker off the coast of Europe and a second ship in the Caribbean as part of escalating enforcement of the Venezuelan oil blockade.

Dramatic footage shows American special forces boarding M/V Bella 1 in the North Atlantic after weeks of tracking it in an operation that has escalated tensions with Moscow.

The Coast Guard also seized a second ship, the Motor Tanker Sophia, off the Caribbean coast in a coordinated operation Wednesday morning.

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth captured the world’s attention by saying the blockade of Venezuelan oil was in full force and that no ship was safe anywhere in the world.

Thereupon, the Russian Ministry of Transport responded with the following words: ‘No state has the right to use force against ships duly registered in the jurisdictions of other countries.’ In the statement, it was stated that US forces landed on Marinera at 15:00 Moscow time and that communication with the ship was lost shortly thereafter.

Donald Trump appears to have ignored threats (including submarine reports) that Vladimir Putin’s forces are lurking nearby.

Russia condemns the use of ‘force’ on the tanker – said contact with the ship was lost

The Russian Ministry of Transport said that contact was lost with the tanker seized by the United States in the North Atlantic when American troops boarded the ship.

The ministry said on December 24 that the tanker ‘received temporary permission to fly the flag of the Russian Federation, which is issued in accordance with Russian law and international law’.

Before the seizure, the Russian Foreign Ministry had announced that it was ‘following with concern the abnormal situation developing around the Russian oil tanker Marinera’.

When US troops seized the ship, the transport ministry said it was ‘outside the territorial waters of any state’ and that ‘contact with the ship had been lost’.

Immediately afterwards, Russian officials, citing the 1982 UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, stated: ‘No state has the right to use force against ships duly registered in the jurisdiction of other states.’

Britain backs US seizure of oil tanker

UK Ministry of Defense confirmed Guard British troops supported the seizure of a US oil tanker in the North Atlantic.

RFA Tideforce provided support to US forces pursuing and intercepting Bella 1, while the RAF provided aerial surveillance support.

‘The UK-US defense and security relationship is the deepest in the world and the UK has provided support in full compliance with international law.’
