‘Russia Wants To See Ukraine Succeed,’ Says Trump As Zelenskyy Stands Beside Him After Peace Talks | World News

US President Donald Trump on Sunday said Russia wants to see Ukraine succeed, as Trump stood by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy when he spoke to the media after hours of peace talks at his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida (local time).
Speaking to reporters, Trump said, “Russia wants to see Ukraine succeed. It sounds a little strange, but President Putin has been very generous in his feelings about Ukraine’s success, including the supply of energy, electricity and other things at very low prices.” he said.
Just before his meeting with Zelenskyy, Trump had a phone call with Russian President Vladimir Putin, which he later described as “very productive.”

Trump’s statement comes as Russia continues to attack Ukraine, including on the day of the Zelenskiy-Trump meeting.
CNN reported that at least one person was killed and several others were injured in a bomb attack in the eastern city of Sloviansk.
In a post on X earlier in the day, Zelenskyy said Russia had launched more than 2,100 attack aircraft, around 800 guided aerial bombs and 94 missiles of various types this week alone.
He said the attacks were aimed at “our people, life and everything that maintains its normal functioning, above all our energy infrastructure.”
Meanwhile, Trump hosted Zelenskyy for dinner and signaled the possibility of a tripartite meeting in which Zelenskyy, Putin and himself would attend.
When asked about the possibility of a trilateral meeting with President Putin and Zelenskyy, Trump said: “I see this happening at the right time, of course. I saw a very interesting President Putin today. He wants to see this happen. He wants to see this happen. He told me very strongly. I believe him… I was on the phone with him for almost 2.5 hours… We discussed a lot of things…”
“We lived through the Russia, Russia, Russia hoax together,” Trump said, referring to investigations into Russia’s interference in the 2016 presidential election.
Regarding the peace agreement between Russia and Ukraine, Trump said that a peace agreement to end the war is “very close.”
While Trump expressed confidence in the status of the peace talks, he underlined that the talks remain extremely complex and declined to give a firm timeline for their resolution.
“I think we’ll find out one way or another in a few weeks,” he said.
He said unexpected problems could arise and derail the entire effort.
“We may have something where an element that you didn’t think about is a big element that will tear it apart. Look, this has been a very difficult negotiation,” he said.
As Trump’s meeting with Zelenskyy ends, he is scheduled to meet with Putin.

We agreed that security guarantees are key to achieving a lasting peace and that our teams will continue to work on all aspects. We agreed that our teams will meet as early as next week to finalize all the issues discussed. We also agreed with President Trump to host Ukrainian and European leaders in Washington DC in January.”
