Russian general killed by car bomb in Moscow, officials say

A Russian general was killed in a car bomb attack in Moscow, officials said.

Russia’s Investigative Committee said Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov died when an explosive placed under a car detonated on Monday morning.

The committee added that Sarvarov, 56, was the head of the armed forces’ operational training department.

It was stated that one of the theories being investigated was that the bomb was planted with the participation of Ukrainian intelligence services. Ukraine did not comment.

Investigators were sent to the scene in a car park near an apartment block in the south of the Russian capital.

Images taken from the area show a heavily damaged white car with its doors blown off, surrounded by other vehicles in the parking lot.

Since Russia launched its large-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, a number of military officials have been targeted in the Russian capital.

A Ukrainian source later told the BBC that Kirillov was killed by the Ukrainian security service, but this was never confirmed on record. As a matter of policy, Ukraine never officially acknowledges or claims responsibility for targeted attacks.
