Russian President Vladimir Putin responded to US President Donald Trump’s invitation to join the “Peace Council” and expressed Russia’s willingness to contribute $1 billion to the council using frozen Russian assets in the United States. He made these remarks in his speech to the Russian Security Council on Wednesday.
According to RT, the Peace Council is a new international body that aims to address global conflicts, including the Israel-Palestine issue. Putin expressed Russia’s willingness to contribute $1 billion to the council using frozen Russian assets in the United States. He made these remarks in his speech to the Russian Security Council on Wednesday.
What did the Russian President say?
According to RT, the Russian president said Moscow could provide $1 billion “right now, even before we decide whether to participate in the work of the Peace Board,” citing Moscow’s “special relations with the Palestinian people.”
He stated that the money could be taken from “Russian assets that were frozen in the previous period.” [US] administration,” he said, noting that Moscow “has always supported and continues to support any efforts aimed at strengthening international stability.”
The proposed council focuses on Middle East peace, particularly the reconstruction of Gaza and the humanitarian needs of Palestinians. RT also reported that Putin thanked Trump for the invitation but said more time would be needed to study the offer and consult with Russia’s strategic partners.
USA invited Russian President to Gaza Peace Board
This comes after US President Donald Trump confirmed on Monday (local time) that Russian President Vladimir Putin had been invited to join the proposed Gaza Peace Board, identifying himself as one of several world leaders being considered for the initiative.
The creation of the Gaza Peace Board, as part of Phase 2 of the 20-Point Peace Plan to end the conflict in the Middle East, aims to promote stability in the Gaza Strip and oversee post-conflict reconstruction. Answering journalists’ questions during the media banter, Trump said that Putin was among those invited to take part in the board, which he claimed would work for peace and stability in Gaza.
The Peace Board was proposed by Trump last September as part of his plan to end the war in Gaza; but the initiative now appears to aim to mediate global conflicts more broadly.
The high-profile international effort invites world leaders from 60 countries to join a new body aimed at promoting stability and overseeing post-conflict reconstruction, particularly in the Gaza Strip.
According to a statement from the White House, the proposed Board members will oversee portfolios critical to Gaza’s stability and long-term success. These include management capacity building, regional relations, restructuring, investment attraction, large-scale financing and capital mobilization.
However, countries that pledge US$1 billion will gain permanent seats on the board, while countries that do not pay can become members for a three-year term.
