Pakistani Home Affairs Minister Muhsin Naqvi faced embarrassment after UK security thoroughly searched his car at the Foreign Office in London during extradition talks.

The car of Interior Minister Muhsin Riza Naqvi, a source of great embarrassment for Pakistan, was checked for explosives at the British Foreign Office in London. In a video that went viral on social media, British security personnel can be seen inspecting the car. The vehicle was subjected to an intensive check before being given permission. The first person to announce the incident to the public was Pakistani journalist Sayeed Yousufzai. Sharing the video on X, he wrote in a social media post, “Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi arrives at UK Foreign Office to meet British officials. According to sources, he will hold discussions regarding the extradition of Shahzad Akbar and Adil Raja to Pakistan.”

It is not yet clear whether the vehicle was thoroughly checked as a routine exercise or whether security personnel were operating for a specific purpose after receiving specific intelligence inputs. Officials from neither the UK nor Islamabad have disclosed the incident. Naqvi traveled to the UK Foreign Office in London to discuss the extradition of convicted sex offenders of Pakistani origin to two retired senior officials close to former Prime Minister Imran Khan living in the UK. Imran Khan is serving his prison sentence in Adiala Jail in Punjab since August 2022.

If reports are to be believed, British authorities searched the minister’s car for materials including explosives and narcotics. Although unconfirmed, social media users reacted harshly, with one commenting: “Embarrassing? No. It was expected. The real shock would have been if they had trusted him.” This shows how unpopular the Pakistani government and the home minister led by Shehbaz Sharif are.

In early January 2025, Naqvi embarrassed his country with a diplomatic laugh. He attended an event organized by the New Federal State of China, a US-based lobby group advocating an end to Communist Party rule in China.
