He announced his departure to listeners this morning.

“When I was approached to launch AM, it was a dream come true,” he said.

“I was asked to commit to delivering the program for two, preferably three, election cycles, and I made three choices.

“This is my ninth year hosting the show, but my body is saying ‘enough’.”

Lane thanked his guests on the show, including “politicians and leaders who don’t want to be in the spotlight but have it anyway.”

“In a healthy democracy, it is very important that you show up, explain your decisions and be held accountable,” he said.

“I hope you stop using political messages and flowery language. Please be honest, open and accountable; that’s what the public wants.”

He also thanked his audience, saying: “I kept you at the forefront of my mind as I framed questions, interviewed political leaders, and tried to explain this crazy world we live in.”

Lane will take an extended leave of absence before returning to his new role at ABC.

The new AM server has not been announced yet.
