Sam Altman says we are in the singularity: ‘This is the moment’

OpenAI’s CEO says we’ve reached a point in the artificial intelligence race that would be the stuff of science fiction novels.

“We are now in the singularity” Sam Altman he said on Saturday’s episode of the “Ruthless” podcast.

Altman said last year that artificial intelligence will surpass human intelligence by 2030. He also said the technology could eventually perform 30% to 40% of the tasks people currently do at work.

The singularity has been an obsession of science fiction writers for nearly 100 years. These writings rarely turn out well. Later in the podcast, Altman criticizes AI leaders who have repeatedly warned that AI is dangerous. He didn’t name its main rival, Anthropic, but its CEO Dario Amodei is known for making dire predictions about the future in his calls for greater attention to security.

“I also think some of the alternative visions that other companies are painting are pretty scary,” Altman said. “I’m going to make sure this gets pushed and that doesn’t happen.”
