Scarborough favourite General Public Food Co. expands to Marmion

General Public Food Co., one of Scarborough’s most popular pizza restaurants, is expanding along the waterfront with the opening of its new location in Marmion.

The new local pizzeria, which opened Thursday, Nov. 27, was built in a former dry cleaning store near the Marmion Village Shopping Center on Sheppard Way.

Like its counterpart, the restaurant will be open from 6 a.m. until late, seven days a week; It will serve coffee, a brunch menu, the brand’s signature homemade sourdough pizzas and various alcoholic beverages.

The newest location from General Public Food Co., which was founded six years ago by hospitality duo Evan Hewitt and Nic Strachan, is the latest venture from the duo, who also run The Rowing Pavilion in Nedlands and Bert’s in City Beach.

Hewitt and Strachan said they had been planning to expand into the northern suburbs for a while and felt Marmion was the perfect fit for their next project, which took about a year to come together.

“There was a real void for a casual, family-friendly neighborhood spot where locals could grab coffee at 6 a.m., eat pizza with the kids, or catch up with friends,” they said.

“When we found this space, we felt right at home. The goal was simple: bring the same Scarborough energy a little further up the coast.”

The duo said they hope to recreate the warm, local community feel and relaxed, family-oriented atmosphere of their Scarborough venue at the new Marmion location.

“If Scarborough has taught us anything, it’s that when you invest in the community, the community invests right back,” they said.

“We look forward to creating more local jobs, hosting regular community events, supporting nearby schools and clubs and becoming a new meeting point for the area.”

The restaurant’s menu will feature all the familiar favorites sourdough pizzas and sourdough twists, as well as tacos, desserts, and entrees like cheesy halloumi croquettes, corn ribs, cauliflower bites, and more.

Reflecting on the Scarborough location, Hewitt said the Marmion venue is completely gluten-free and nut-free and offers a variety of options to suit all tastes.

“We built each of our spaces with our families in mind,” Hewitt said.

“We both have children and our families suffer from food intolerances, so ensuring our venues are gluten and nut free has always been very important to us.

“This means everyone can enjoy the experience together without compromise.”
