School plunged into lockdown after man seen with ‘suspected weapon’ | UK | News

A school in the UK has been put on lockdown after a man was seen with a “suspicious weapon” at a nearby bus stop. Earlier today, it was reported that John Spence Community High School in North Shields had decided to take precautionary action.
Northumbria police were called just after 2.15pm to a report of “suspicious activity” on Preston Road North. Police teams arrived at the scene to find the man, but the person reported had already left the area. Police then maintained a visible presence in the neighborhood, aiming to defuse tensions and provide a sense of stability to residents shaken by the incident.
A spokesman for Northumbria Police said: “Shortly after 2.15pm today (Monday), we received a report of suspicious activity on Preston Road North in North Shields.
“It is understood that a male seen at a bus stop along the route was thought to be carrying a suspected weapon. Officers attended the scene to carry out inquiries and reassure the wider community, but the man in question had left the area.
“Some schools in the immediate area entered into voluntary lockdown as a precautionary measure, which ended a short time later. Investigations are ongoing and anyone with concerns is encouraged to speak to an officer on duty.”
