Schools in India will remain closed today, October 28, 2025, due to Chhath Puja festivities in Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh and heavy rains due to Cyclone Montha affecting Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Odisha. Authorities call for caution due to flooding and strong winds.
As India observes a mix of festive spirit and severe weather conditions today, many states have declared school holidays on October 28, 2025 (Tuesday). While the eastern states are engrossed in Chhath Puja celebrations, parts of the southern and eastern coastline are bracing for the effects of Cyclone Montha, which has brought heavy rains and strong winds to several regions.
tamil nadu
In Tamil Nadu, schools in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram and Chengalpattu were closed today as a precaution against the advancing cyclone. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy rain, strong winds and rough sea conditions along the coast. While intermittent showers and flooding were reported in low-lying areas, authorities appealed to parents and students to stay home and follow updates from local education departments before resuming normal routines.
Andhra Pradesh
Neighboring Andhra Pradesh announced school closures in many districts, including Visakhapatnam, Srikakulam, Vizianagaram, East Godavari and Nellore, following persistent showers associated with Cyclone Montha. IMD has placed these regions under orange alert, predicting extremely heavy rainfall and wind speeds of up to 70 km per hour. Disaster response teams were deployed to sensitive coastal areas as a precaution.
Odisha
In Odisha, classes were suspended for a day in areas like Ganjam, Rayagada and Khordha due to constant rain and lightning threats. The Odisha State Disaster Management Authority (OSDMA) has warned fishermen against venturing into the sea and advised citizens to avoid unnecessary travel until conditions stabilize.
Bihar, Jharkhand and Uttar Pradesh
Meanwhile, the spirit of Chhath Puja dominates Bihar, Jharkhand and eastern Uttar Pradesh, where today the sacred ritual of offering Arghya to the rising Sun is celebrated. Schools, colleges and many government offices remain closed in Patna, Gaya, Ranchi, Varanasi and Lucknow to facilitate smooth conduct of the festival and manage crowds at ghats and riversides.
Delhi-NCR region
In contrast, Delhi and NCR have not announced any school closures, but the weather is expected to remain cloudy with a chance of light rain due to the interaction between Cyclone Montha and a western disturbance.
As many states celebrate or confront adverse weather conditions today, authorities across India continue to prioritize public safety and preparedness, urging citizens to remain vigilant and follow official recommendations.
