Second Gold Coast drowning in two weeks as man pulled from water at popular beach

A man has died after being pulled unconscious from the water at a popular Gold Coast beach.

The 54-year-old went swimming at The Spit this morning when he ran into trouble.

Surf Life Saving Queensland officer Ken Lloyd said it was understood the man was with his carer.

Nearby families used picnic rugs to shield the man while lifeguards and paramedics performed CPR.

Despite all efforts, the man could not be brought back to life.

“The public were great, they helped shade it, keep the kids away,” Lloyd said.

“They also saved the babysitter.”

This is the second drowning on the Gold Coast in less than two weeks.

A 26-year-old Indian man died after being pulled from the water by a lifeguard at a nearby beach.
