The man accused of a series of infamous Gilgo Beach serial murders that have plagued Long Island for decades has finally confessed to his crimes as the families of his victims broke down in tears outside the Long Island courthouse where the trial was held.

Rex Heuermann, a 62-year-old architect and Massapequa Park resident, made chilling confessions about the murders, including disturbing details about murder rituals.

He admitted to strangling all of the victims before dismembering them after restraining them in the same manner, Express US reported. Showing no emotion, he answered largely a simple “yes” to every question asked, maintaining direct eye contact with the district attorney throughout the Long Island courtroom proceedings.

The confessions left the victims’ families visibly devastated. People speaking outside the courtroom afterward broke down in tears as they reflected on the loss of their loved ones and the harrowing memories the trial evoked.

Heuermann had previously pleaded not guilty to seven murders that occurred between 1993 and 2010 and was arrested in 2023 in connection with the infamous case.

Appearing in court, Heuermann withdrew his criminal complaint regarding all these accusations. He also confessed to the murder of the eighth victim, Karen Vergata.

The remaining victims are Maureen Brainard-Barnes, 25; Jessica Taylor, 20; Valerie Mack, 24; Sandra Costilla, 28; Melissa Barthelemy, 24; Megan Waterman, 22; and Amber Lynn Costello, 27. Most of the victims’ remains were found near Heuermann’s home on Long Island, according to authorities.

Vergata is believed to have been 34 years old when he disappeared. When Vergata’s remains were found along the Fire Island shoreline in 1996, she was classified as a “Fire Island Jane Doe” for many years because she could not be identified.

His remains were first matched with those of a skull unearthed at Tobay Beach near Gilgo Beach in 2011. Vergata’s remains were fully identified in 2023, 27 years after Heuermann’s arrest.

The charges carry a sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole. A hearing was scheduled for September.

The decades-long investigation into the serial killings began in 2010 when police investigated the disappearance of 23-year-old Shannan Gilbert. The investigation led to the discovery of at least 10 human remains, believed to be mostly young female sex workers, along Ocean Parkway. Heuermann is not charged with Gilbert’s death, and investigators do not believe all of the killings are linked to a single person.

The investigation went cold for more than a decade until it was reopened in 2022. Suffolk County Police Commissioner Rodney Harrison then formed a multi-agency task force to reinvestigate the murders. According to court documents, this task force built its case against Heuermann using DNA evidence, cell phone records, witness statements and hair samples.

The investigation culminated in Heuermann’s arrest in July 2023, in a dramatic scene when law enforcement surrounded him outside his office in Midtown Manhattan.

Heuermann was initially charged with the murders of Barthelemy, Waterman and Costello.

During the eighteen months following his arrest, Brianard-Barnes was also accused of murdering Taylor, Mack and Costilla.
