Mr. Abdullah had escaped unhurt in the assassination attempt during his marriage ceremony held at the Royal Park Banquet Hall in Greater Kailash, Jammu, on March 11. The accused, identified here as Kamal Singh, approached the former Prime Minister and tried to open fire from close range.

“However, the attempt was prevented thanks to the rapid intervention of police personnel assigned with the protected person,” the police said.

Police arrested Mr. Singh, 63, a resident of Purani Mandi. According to the police, the gun used in the crime was seized from the suspect. He told police he had “his own purposes”. The suspect, who is the shop owner, has no criminal record.

Police said first information report number 29/2026 under BNS Section 109 and Section 3/25 of the Arms Act was registered at Gangyal Police Station in Jammu.

The SIT was formed after the three-time Prime Minister expressed concerns about security arrangements at the venue. Union Home Minister Amit Shah had also met Mr. Abdullah and assured an investigation into the incident.
