Several people killed when bus crashes into bus shelter in Sweden – as driver is arrested

Many people lost their lives when a bus crashed into a bus stop in central Stockholm today.
The accident occurred around 15:00 local time in the Ostermalm district of the Swedish capital.
Police later cordoned off Valhallavägen street near the KTH Royal Institute of Technology, where the accident occurred.
According to local media reports, some citizens were seriously injured in the accident.
Police said many people were killed and injured but did not say how many people were involved. They have since arrested the bus driver and opened an aggravated manslaughter investigation in light of the tragedy.
A spokesman for Stockholm rescue services said at least five people were affected by the crash but did not confirm how many people were killed or injured.
Dozens of emergency services workers, including police, paramedics and firefighters, are still at the scene.
Photographs of the bus after the accident show that the windshield of the bus was seriously cracked.

A local woman told Expressen: ‘I was sitting on the sofa and heard explosions. ‘I got really stressed’.
Another witness told local broadcaster SVT Nyheter that several people came to their shop crying after the incident.
A spokesman for Stockholm public transport authority SL told local media: ‘This is a serious incident.’
The city is diverting most bus routes to Valhallavägen, which are closed until further notice.
Meanwhile, a spokesman for bus company Transdev also confirmed that one of its vehicles was involved in the incident.
Spokesperson Lovisa Åbom told local media: ‘It is one of our buses involved in this incident and it is a double-decker. “I know there are injured people, but I don’t have any information about how it happened right now,” he said.
