Severe storms, large hail and damaging winds possible
Severe storms with large hail and damaging winds are likely across south-east Queensland tonight and tomorrow.
The worst-hit areas are likely to be just west of Brisbane and inland between the Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast, although some suburbs of the River City may be inundated.
“If severe storms develop, there is the potential to bring large hail, damaging winds and heavy rainfall,” senior meteorologist Felim Hanniffy said.
“The risk is primarily in more inland areas, but it could certainly… move towards more coastal areas.”
The Bureau of Meteorology’s Hanniffy added that up to 50 millimeters of rainfall was possible in some areas. The worst-hit parts of Brisbane were likely to get a maximum of 20 millimeters, but some suburbs were likely to get significantly less.
Temperatures and humidity were expected to decrease slightly but remain high; Maximum temperatures of 30 degrees or more are forecast every day next week.
“Such [humidity] The Far North is more like Queensland and that heat and humidity means there is extra instability in the air so we have the risk of potential severe storms today,” Hanniffy said.
