The administration, which issued prohibitory orders considering law and order concerns over the death of a teenager in Ghazipur earlier this month, banned all demonstrations and barred anyone from visiting his village to offer condolences to the family.

The Uttar Pradesh government issued a statement in Lucknow, saying “unconfirmed rumours” were being spread by some “naughty elements” and Opposition parties were “trying to sensationalize the issue”.

“Considering the seriousness of the situation, Ghazipur District Magistrate Anupam Shukla has imposed Section 163 of BNSS (power to issue orders in case of detection of immediate nuisance or danger) across the district. Under this provision, no political party or group is allowed to assemble anywhere within the district,” the statement said.
