Sheikh Hasina Case: After Court’s Death Sentence Verdict, MEA Issues FIRST Response | India News

Sheikh Hasina Decision: A Bangladesh court on Monday afternoon found ousted former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina guilty of committing “crimes against humanity” during the July-August uprising in 2024. Local media reported that the International Crimes Tribunal-1 sentenced Hasina to death. Meanwhile, reacting to the court’s decision, India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said in a statement on Monday that New Delhi has taken note of the verdict announced by the Bangladesh International Crimes Tribunal and that India remains committed to the best interests of the people of Bangladesh.

MEA also underlined that India will always communicate constructively with all stakeholders.

The statement said, “India has taken note of the verdict announced by the ‘Bangladesh International Crimes Tribunal’ against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. As a close neighbour, India remains committed to the best interests of the people of Bangladesh, including peace, democracy, participation and stability in that country. To this end, we will always communicate constructively with all stakeholders.”

Sheikh Hasina’s death sentence

According to the Dhaka Tribune newspaper, the court found the former Prime Minister guilty of all five crimes against humanity.

According to ANI, the local news source also said that the historic verdict concluded that Hasina and two other accused, former police chief Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun and former interior minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, planned and facilitated the atrocities during the July-August movement.

The 78-year-old leader fled to New Delhi after the overthrow of his regime in Dhaka. Sheikh Hasina, who is currently in exile in India, was tried in absentia.

Sheikh Hasina’s Response to the Decision

Responding to the verdict against her, Awami League leader Sheikh Hasina said that the verdict was delivered by a fraudulent court formed and presided over by an unelected government that has no democratic mandate.
