New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi received an official invitation to Chinese President Xi Jinping to join the BRICS Summit, which was prepared to host India in 2026. On Sunday, the two leaders met among the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit in China.
According to a press release from the Indian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MEA), President Xi expressed his gratitude for the invitation and provided China’s support to India’s upcoming BRICS presidency.
The meeting between Prime Minister Modi and President Xi took place during the 25th SCO President Summit, where the two leaders participated in discussions on various key issues, including the ongoing border status.

Both leaders underlined the importance of developing strong and stable relations between India and China.
PM Modi’s visit to China for the SCO summit points to his first trip to the country in seven years. He arrived on Saturday and held bilateral meetings with Xi Jinping on Sunday.
During the negotiations at the delegation level, Prime Minister Modi emphasized that millions of people in both countries are related to bilateral cooperation at the essence of welfare. President Xi reiterated this idea by saying, “It is vital for the elephant and the dragon to walk together”.
The Mea statement said that both leaders confirmed each other as a commitment to see each other as development partners rather than competitors. They decided that disputes should not be transformed into disputes.
Prime Minister Modi also stressed that India and China pursue strategic autonomy and that the perspectives of third countries should not affect their relationships.
“The two leaders found it necessary to expand a common ground on bilateral, regional and global issues and difficulties such as terrorism and fair trade on multilateral platforms, ME he said.
