How social media figures out your age without you even knowing

Tens of millions of Australians will have their ages checked by big tech to make sure they are old enough to have an account when Australia’s social media ban on teenagers comes into force in a week’s time.

But many, if not most, people won’t even notice it’s happening.

Much of the news about how companies will enforce social media bans on teens has focused on methods such as facial scans or requiring the account holder to present government-issued identification.
