Operation Toofan: 175 NDPS cases registered in two days

Police registered 175 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and detained 182 people in Ernakulam district in two days during the combing operations conducted under Operation Toofan: Narco Hunt.

Ernakulam Rural police registered 80 cases and arrested 85 persons in a special operation on Sunday, June 28, while Kochi city police registered 95 cases and 102 persons on Saturday, June 27, police said.

5 of the suspects detained by the gendarmerie teams were arrested by the court. Seizures of suspected drug types in connection with the cases included 2.45 grams of MDMA, 115.13 grams of marijuana, 20 hashish beedis, 5.02 grams of heroin and 5.34 grams of hashish.

Forty people were arrested in several cases for alleged possession of small quantities of narcotics as defined in the NDPS act. 22 people allegedly using drugs were detained. Additionally, 18 people were arrested in 18 cases related to banned tobacco products.

The cases include 10 registered by Perumbavoor police, six in Edathala and five in Aluva.

Searches were also carried out at train stations, bus stops, vehicles, hotels, hostels and commercial establishments.

Provincial police recorded the cases after raids on 181 addresses. Police also registered 45 cases of alleged drunk driving, 15 under the Abkari Act and 19 under the Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products Act. Police said such comprehensive checks will continue in the coming days.
