Shocking ‘BJP’ victory in Bangladesh: How a single seat stunned the border; Tarique Rahman set for Sunday oath | World News

Bangladesh Election Results 2026: In a result that briefly caused confusion across the border, the BJP claimed victory in the Bangladesh National Parliament elections, although it is not the Indian political party of the same name. Bangladesh Jatiya Party (BJP) President Andaleeve Rahman has emerged victorious in a high-stakes contest as the country moves towards a new political era.
Thursday’s election marks the “Generation Z” movement’s first democratic exercise since the ouster of Sheikh Hasina in 2024.

According to the Results Collection and Dissemination Center in Agargaon, Andaleeve Rahman won Bhola-1 constituency by a significant margin. The unofficial results of the 13th National Parliament Election are as follows:
- Andaleeve Rahman (BJP): 105,543 votes
- Md Nazrul Islam (Jamaat-e-Islami): 75,337 votes
Although the Bangladesh Jatiya Party is an ally of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), this win represents the party’s only victory in the current parliamentary elections. In the referendum held simultaneously in the same region, voters overwhelmingly voted “Yes”, receiving 143 thousand 473 votes against 44 thousand 731 “No” votes.
BNP wins supermajority in post-Hasina era
The broader electoral landscape shows a decisive shift towards the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). The contest turned into a primary contest between the BNP and its former ally Jamaat-e-Islami after the Awami League’s registration was suspended by the Election Commission.
Unofficial figures show BNP has crossed the 200-seat mark in the 300-member Jatiya Sangsad. This power provides a clear path for the interim government, led by Nobel laureate Mohammed Yunus, to hand over power to an elected administration.
Tarique Rahman’s return
The 2026 elections mark the definitive political comeback of former President Ziaur Rahman and Tarique Rahman, the 60-year-old son of former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. After years of exile and political turmoil, Rahman is now in a position to lead the nation.
The victory of Rahman, often a polarizing figure in South Asian politics, means a dramatic realignment of power in Dhaka. He is expected to take the oath of office this Sunday, completing the transition from the interim council to the BNP-led government.
A new page after the ‘Generation Z’ revolution
The 13th National Parliament Elections in 2024 follow a nearly two-year transition following student-led protests. The ban of the Awami League and the exile of Sheikh Hasina created a political vacuum which the BNP has now successfully filled. International observers noted that the turnout and relatively peaceful conduct of the elections was a milestone in the country’s democratic recovery.
