A paratrooper’s air stunt was nearly fatal
An aerial demonstration nearly proved fatal for a skydiver, leaving him suspended at 15,000 feet. The incident occurred as part of a planned 16-track formation jump south of Cairns in the Australian state of Queensland, video of which was released by Australian authorities on Thursday.
The demonstration, a routine activity, turned out to be fatal just seconds after the first parachutist reached the plane’s exit point.
How did the incident happen?
In a stunning video shared by the Australian Transport Safety Bureau (ATSB), a parachutist’s spare parachute is seen suddenly opening when its handle gets caught in the wing cover of the plane. As the parachute closed tightly around the tail of the aircraft, the parachutist was forced backwards due to the sudden deployment within seconds and his legs hit the aircraft.
According to investigators, the effect of the interference also sent the camera operator, who was filming from the door of the plane, into a wild spin. Authorities did not disclose the identities of those involved in the incident.
In the video, the stranded parachutist appears to be momentarily frozen, his hands on his helmet, hanging in a 15,000-foot drop without escape. The parachutist also appeared panicked but quickly used a hooked knife to cut through the tangled reserve parachute lines; This was a move that, according to researchers, likely saved their lives. After being released, the parachutist opened his main parachute and made a safe landing on the ground.
