I&B Ministry sets up panel to boost film industry

Minister of Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw on Monday, June 29, 2026, directed urgent structural measures to support film production, distribution and technological integration.

“The Ministry has established a high-level working group. Prasoon Joshi will chair this Group. Industry experts and technology partners will also be included in this group,” it said in a press release.

The group will examine the opportunities and challenges facing Indian cinema and suggest ways to strengthen the industry.

The group will also suggest steps to make Indian films more competitive globally. “The group will identify best practices. It will also propose a complete policy framework for the long-term growth of Indian cinema,” the statement said. It is expected to submit its report to the Ministry within three months.

The Ministry also prepared a model State Cinema Regulation for adoption by States. “Regulation of cinemas and theaters comes under the State list. Different States apply different rules for the various permits required for cinemas and theaters. This has been a major impediment to the growth of cinema infrastructure, especially in small towns and rural areas.”

The Ministry has now sent this Model State Cinema Regulations to all State governments and asked them to adopt the rules. The Ministry will also help states implement regulations, the statement said.
