Six And City: Will Wishes Be Realized?
As the new year approaches, this columnist looks to the future with cautious optimism by offering six wishes for Chennai and Chennaiites.
Water safety: Proper management of reservoirs and maintenance of water bodies by regularly removing encroachments and water hyacinths will help ensure water supply throughout the year. Strict implementation of rainwater harvesting can also make a significant difference.
Cleaner air: Although Chennai’s air quality is generally better than other cities due to the sea breeze, it deteriorates during festivals such as Deepavali and in the months of December and January. Sometimes rain helps clear the fog the day after Deepavali. Perungudi and Kodungaiyur are seeing significant increases in pollution and dust pollution remains a concern in some areas such as Manali and Ennore. In addition, respiratory problems continue to increase due to pollution on the roads and vehicle fumes. Along with improving infrastructure, using public transport, carpooling and turning off idling engines will help tackle rising pollution.
Smart monsoon management: Concerted efforts should be made to ensure that all stormwater drains in the city work effectively so that heavy rains bring relief and not flooding to homes, roads and schools.
Greener city: Amidst rapid urbanization, it is crucial to maintain Chennai’s green lungs to provide vital oxygen, shade and coolness. These places not only serve as natural air purifiers but also as entertainment centers, combating the city’s concrete growth and pollution.
Uninterrupted public transportation: Smoother traffic will help connect people without congestion. Expanded metro line coverage and improved bus services, as well as safer roads for drivers and pedestrians, are most important.
Stray dog threat: While dog bite cases are creating fear among the public, the administration needs to continue its efforts to curb the dog menace.
