Sky News Australia presenter and former Iranian citizen Rita Panahi celebrated the death of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a scathing rebuke published on Saturday.

“This will be the shortest editorial I will ever submit.” The “Strangers” co-host said:. “All I have to say is that after 47 years of Islamist oppression, the dictator is dead and Iran is on the verge of liberation. I never thought I would see this day in my life.”

He concluded his comments with what he called “meaningless Persian”, which roughly translates to “Your father is a dog, may you have dirt on your head and rot in hell.” His co-host Rowan Dean agreed, noting that the news was personal for Panahi.

“The whole time I’ve known you, we’ve seen your pain with what’s going on in Iran, and it’s nice to hear positive things from you. It’s so amazing,” Dean said.

Panahi left Iran as a child and reiterated that although he knew the regime would eventually be overthrown, he never thought he would live to see it.

“If I had gone to Iran today, last week, I would have been stuck in prison and died very quickly… They would know what I said about the regime, what I wrote about many things like that and what I said in such programs, so I can never go back,” Panahi said. he said.

He added that he hasn’t been able to visit his family or bring his son to see the country and complimented President Donald Trump for seizing the opportunity to oust the leader during an election year.

“Again, when I talk about Donald Trump and his courage to do this, his courage to do this in an election year with the midterms coming up, it’s not a popular course of action. It’s unpopular even among many on his side who don’t want America involved in Iran’s domestic politics and are seeking regime change. So it’s a huge risk for him to do that, but it’s the right thing to do, even if it comes at a personal political cost,” Panahi said. he said.
