Skyhooks guitarist Bob ‘Bongo’ Starkie dies aged 73 after leukaemia battle

Australian rock legend and Skyhooks guitarist Bob ‘Bongo’ Starkie has died at the age of 73 after losing his battle with leukemia.
His band and family released a statement saying he died Saturday morning surrounded by family and loved ones and listening to Chuck Berry.
“It is with heavy hearts that we must send out this news that Bob ‘Bongo’ Starkie passed away early this morning,” the band said in a statement.
“He fought a courageous battle against leukemia last year, hoping to return to the road to do more shows. Music was in his blood until the end.”
Starkie was part of Skyhooks’ iconic line-up in the mid-to-late 1970s, providing guitar and backing vocals on some of their best-known records, including Living in the 70’s and Ego Is Not a Dirty Word.
Earlier this year, Starkie was forced to cancel upcoming shows after he was diagnosed with leukemia.
“Bob was the guitarist for the iconic Skyhooks, was the youngest of the band, and embraced theatricality, from striking facial makeup to unique stage costumes,” the band said.
“Music always came first and touring and playing on stage was his absolute joy.
“The members of Skyhooks are saddened by the loss of our bandmate and offer their condolences to Bob’s family.”

His daughter Indiana said in a statement that he died peacefully.
“Our beloved Grandfather Bop departed in peace listening to Chuck Berry,” he said.
“Surrounded by friends and family, she’s cuddling her fur baby, Bonnie.
“He will be greatly missed by his daughters Indiana and Arabella, his grandchildren Phoenix and Lucia, his partner Chrissy, his great friend Ian, and his sons-in-law Simon and Chris.
“Thank you for all your support, he felt the love to the fullest.”
