SC Modifies 2017 Order, Anurag Thakur Can Now Participate In BCCI Affairs

New Delhi: In relief to former BCCI president Anurag Thakur, the Supreme Court on Thursday reversed its January 2017 order and said he will be free to participate in the affairs of the cricket board as per the rules and regulations. In January 2017, the apex court had directed Thakur to “cease and desist” his involvement with the affairs of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

On Thursday, a bench comprising Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi applied the doctrine of proportionality and modified the January 2017 order.

The court accepted the decision following Thakur’s application seeking amendments to the 2017 decision. The high court was of the opinion that Thakur later offered an unconditional apology to him.

The apex court had on January 2, 2017, initiated a defamation and perjury case against Thakur for making a false statement regarding writing to the then International Cricket Council (ICC) president Shashank Manohar on BCCI’s autonomy.

On July 14, 2017, the top court granted Thakur’s release and dropped the defamation and perjury cases against him after he personally offered an unconditional and unequivocal apology to Thakur.
