Snow and ice warnings issued ahead of Monday return to work

The Met Office has issued yellow weather warnings for snowfall in Shetland, Orkney and parts of northern mainland Scotland from 6pm on Sunday until 10am on Monday.

Heavy snowfall in recent days has resulted in snow depths of over 40cm being reported in parts of Moray.

Strong winds are causing drifting, with Network Rail Scotland reporting up to 1.2 meters (4ft) of snow drifting on the line between Aberdeen and Dundee.

Scottish regional airline Loganair canceled flights from Aberdeen and Inverness airports on Sunday and Monday due to heavy snowfall.

As the showers became more intense and frequent on Sunday night, the Meteorology warned of the possibility of another 20 to 30 cm of snowfall.

Further road and rail closures are possible and power outages are likely in some areas.

The Met Office also warned that mobile phone coverage may be affected.

Hundreds of schools in northern Scotland will remain closed after the Christmas break on Monday.

The return of students has been delayed in Aberdeenshire, Shetland and Orkney, while schools in Aberdeen will start later.
